About This Workshop

Ever wondered how comedians create sketch comedy? Well this session is for you! Over a two hour session with an experienced improviser you'll learn some of the secrets behind the game-of-the-scene based approach popularised in the famous improv schools of New York and Los Angeles. You'll learn how to quickly build base realities, establish and frame premises, heighten and explore comedic ideas, tilt them in exciting and unexpected directions and, finally, how to end them on a high!

What's more, you'll meet a bunch of people who all share the same goal - to have fun and make each other laugh. Keep coming back each week and not only will you and your new friends know how to find the laughs fast, you will soon have the skills to improvise an entire half hour sketch show!

Meet The Instructor

Rob Carr
Rob Carr

he/him

Founder of The Improv Chippy, Rob flew over to Melbourne in his early thirties and studied intensively with some of the best comedic talent in Australia. Comedy, in particular improv, changed his life for the better and he has now returned to Grimsby with the hope of gifting the same for others. He has performed in Defrost Festival, the biggest improv festival in the Southern Hemisphere and in Robin Hood International Improv Festival one of the UK's top improv festivals. He hopes to establish North East Lincolnshire's first Harold teams in 2026 and develop a style of improv unique to the area. You can read more about his origin story here.

About This Course

Ever wondered how comedians create sketch comedy? Intrigued about what makes a good scene? Just want to be silly and have fun? Then Beginners Improv is for you!

Over a two hour session with an experienced improviser you'll learn the secrets behind improvisation taught in the famous schools of Chicago, New York and Los Angeles and seen on screen in just about every sketch show, sitcom and comedy movie made today!

Sessions will alternate between relationship-based improv and game-of-the-scene based improv so you can get a feel for both and work out which one works best for you. In relationship-based classes you'll learn how to slowly build environments and realistic characters, explore relationships, find unusual incongruences, increase and relieve tension and how to end scenes in satisfying ways. In contrast, in game-of-the-scene based improv, you'll learn how to quickly build base realities, establish and frame premises, heighten and explore comedic ideas, tilt them in exciting and unexpected directions and, finally, how to end them on a high!

But the best part? You'll make a bunch of new people who all share the same goal - to have fun and make each other laugh. Keep coming back each week and you and your new friends will soon have the skills to improvise an entire show!
