Recording Policy

The Improv Chippy is committed to supporting performers in promoting their work responsibly while maintaining respect for audience privacy, performer consent, and the artistic integrity of our events.

For Media & Press

Members of the media are welcome to photograph, film, or record performances for the purposes of news coverage or review, provided that they have obtained prior written approval from The Improv Chippy Ltd.

  • Media access must be requested in advance by emailing us with your publication, outlet, or platform and the performance you wish to cover.
  • Approved media must check in with staff on arrival and follow any guidance regarding designated filming or photography areas.
  • All recordings, images, or coverage must accurately represent the performance and not be used in a misleading or defamatory context.
  • Any use of The Improv Chippy name, logos, or branding in published material must comply with the Brand Guidelines set out in our Press Kit and be credited appropriately.
  • Use of flash photography must be confirmed with performers in advance.
  • Recordings may be of any duration, unless specific time limits are communicated in advance.
  • Commercial or promotional use of recorded content (for example, advertisements, sponsorships, or merchandise) requires separate written permission.
  • We reserve the right to revoke or restrict media access at any time if it interferes with the event, the audience experience, or performer consent.

By attending an event in an official media capacity, you agree to abide by these conditions and all other relevant policies of The Improv Chippy Ltd.

For Students

  • Use of phones or other recording devices is discouraged during classes but not prohibited.
  • Please do not take audio recordings, photos, or videos of your classmates unless you have the explicit permission of everyone involved.
  • If we believe that any recording activity is disrupting teaching or the learning environment, you will be asked to stop.
  • If a complaint is made, you must cease recording immediately and for the remainder of your course.
  • Photography and videography are permitted during student showcases, provided they comply with the general rules set out in this policy.
  • You are permitted to record the entirety of your own performance in student showcases, but you are prohibited from commercially distributing any recordings.

By attending an event as a student, you agree to abide by these conditions and all other relevant policies of The Improv Chippy Ltd.

Photography

For Audience Members

  1. Photography is generally permitted during performances unless otherwise stated, provided that images are not used for commercial gain.
  2. If a performer, team, or show has explicitly requested no photography, this will be announced and signposted on the night.
  3. Photography is strictly prohibited during any act or performance involving nudity, partial nudity, or other sensitive content, unless express consent is given by the performer(s).
  4. Flash photography is not permitted unless specifically announced, in order to avoid distracting performers or audience members.
  5. If your photography results in a complaint from a performer, team, or another audience member, you may be asked to stop.
  6. Audience members who fail to comply with these rules may be ejected from the venue without refund and may face a temporary or permanent ban from future events held by The Improv Chippy Ltd.

By attending an event as audience member, you agree to abide by these conditions and all other relevant policies of The Improv Chippy Ltd.

For Performers

  • Please familiarise yourself with the Audience Member photography rules.
  • If you wish to prohibit all photography, please notify us in advance so that we can communicate and signpost this to the audience.
  • You may override rules 3 and 4 (for example, allowing flash or photography during specific acts) at your discretion — please inform us in advance so we can advise the audience.
  • If your event is not produced by The Improv Chippy (e.g. third party teams, third party performers) or an Improv Jam, Script Jam or Scraps event, you may use photos of your own performances only for any lawful personal, professional, or creative purpose, provided the material is not used in a way that misrepresents, harms, or brings The Improv Chippy Ltd into disrepute.
  • If you perform as part of a troupe or group, please obtain the explicit consent of all performers appearing in any images before posting or distributing them.
  • You are welcome to designate audience members to take photos so long as they do not interfere with the enjoyment of the show by other audience members through their activities.
  • You are welcome to hire or designate a photographer but you must let The Improv Chippy Ltd know in advance of the event and they must agree to abide by the Terms set out in the For Media & Press section of this policy.

By performing, you agree to abide by these conditions and all other relevant policies of The Improv Chippy Ltd.

Videography

For Audience Members

  1. Short clips (1 minute or less) are generally permitted during performances unless otherwise stated. The total duration of all clips recorded must not exceed 25% of the total show time.
  2. Filming a performance in its entirety is prohibited unless you have the explicit written permission of the performer(s).
  3. Filming is strictly prohibited during any act or performance involving nudity, partial nudity, or other sensitive content, unless express consent is given by the performer(s).
  4. The use of lights or additional recording equipment is not permitted without the written permission of the performer(s), to avoid distracting performers or audience members.
  5. If your recording results in a complaint from a performer, team, or another audience member, you may be asked to stop.
  6. Audience members who fail to comply with these rules may be ejected from the venue without refund and may face a temporary or permanent ban from future events held by The Improv Chippy Ltd.

By attending an event as audience member, you agree to abide by these conditions and all other relevant policies of The Improv Chippy Ltd.

For Performers

  • If you wish to prohibit all videography, please notify us in advance so we can communicate and signpost this to the audience.
  • You may override rules 3 and 4 (for example, allowing filming during specific acts) at your discretion — please inform us in advance so we can advise the audience.
  • If you perform as part of a troupe or group, please obtain the explicit consent of all performers appearing in any videos before posting or distributing them.
  • You may designate audience members to take videos on your behalf, provided their recording does not interfere with the enjoyment of the show by others.
  • You may hire or designate a videographer, but you must notify The Improv Chippy Ltd in advance of the event. The videographer must agree to abide by the For Media & Press terms in this policy.
  • In all cases, you are entitled to film your full performance or event.
  • If your event is produced by The Improv Chippy (e.g. house team performances, company showcases), you are prohibited—unless you have obtained explicit written permission—from publicly distributing videos that, in total, would exceed 25% of the event's total runtime (for example, releasing four separate clips that together constitute the full event).
  • If your event is not produced by The Improv Chippy (e.g. third party teams, third party performers) or an Improv Jam, Script Jam or Scraps event, you may use videos of your own performances only for any lawful personal, professional, or creative purpose, provided the material is not used in a way that misrepresents, harms, or brings The Improv Chippy Ltd into disrepute.

By performing, you agree to abide by these conditions and all other relevant policies of The Improv Chippy Ltd.

Audio Recording

For Audience Members

  4. The use of bulky audio recording equipment is not permitted without the written permission of the performer(s), to avoid distracting performers or audience members.
  5. If your recording results in a complaint from a performer, team, or another audience member, you may be asked to stop.
  6. Audience members who fail to comply with these rules may be ejected from the venue without refund and may face a temporary or permanent ban from future events held by The Improv Chippy Ltd.

By attending an event as audience member, you agree to abide by these conditions and all other relevant policies of The Improv Chippy Ltd.

For Performers

  • Please familiarise yourself with the Audience Member Audio Recording Rules.
  • If you wish to prohibit all audio recording, please notify us in advance so we can communicate and signpost this to the audience.
  • You may override rules 3 and 4 (for example, allowing filming during specific acts) at your discretion — please inform us in advance so we can advise the audience.
  • If you perform as part of a troupe or group, please obtain the explicit consent of all performers before distributing any audio recordings.
  • You may record audio yourself using personal devices such as phones and lav mics.
  • For shows using microphones, we may be able to record audio for you directly via the mixing console. Please contact us in advance so we can do tests at the particular venue.
  • You may designate audience members to take audio recordings on your behalf, provided their recording does not interfere with the enjoyment of the show by others.
  • You may hire or designate a sound recordist, but you must notify The Improv Chippy Ltd in advance of the event. The sound recordist must agree to abide by the For Media & Press terms in this policy.
  • In all cases, you are entitled to record your full performance or event.
  • If your event is produced by The Improv Chippy (e.g. house team performances, company showcases), you are prohibited—unless you have obtained explicit written permission—from publicly distributing audio that, in total, would exceed 25% of the event's total runtime (for example, releasing four separate clips that together constitute the full event).
  • If your event is not produced by The Improv Chippy (e.g. third party teams, third party performers) or an Improv Jam, Script Jam or Scraps event, you may use audio recordings of your own performances only for any lawful personal, professional, or creative purpose, provided the material is not used in a way that misrepresents, harms, or brings The Improv Chippy Ltd into disrepute.

By performing, you agree to abide by these conditions and all other relevant policies of The Improv Chippy Ltd.

Liability Disclaimer

The Improv Chippy Ltd is not liable for any personal, reputational, or professional consequences, losses, or damages arising from recordings, photographs, videos, or other media taken of any person at an Improv Chippy event — whether captured in compliance with or in defiance of the above rules.

Failure to abide by any of the policies set out in this document may result in removal from events without refund, revocation of recording privileges, banning from future events, and where appropriate, legal action.
